About me
Truth is, I love autumn. It's my favourite time of the year. I don't know if it's the same for you, but for me the year really begins now, not in January. School habits that never go away, I suppose, and that’s fine.
Today I'll talk about myself
I don't do this very often. I don't particularly like it. But there's one thing I think is worth sharing with you: where my approach to looking at and studying stories comes from. On the website you'll find more concrete information about my biography; here I want to put together something more subjective.
I didn't come into screenwriting through film. I came into it through art.
I didn't go to film school. I moved to London, with the youthful drive of thinking that nothing was happening in Barcelona and that I needed to go abroad. There I did a degree where photography, video, multimedia and film all coexisted, with theoretical courses that pushed us to think of these disciplines as art, with all the complexity that entails. Screenwriting came later, when I felt that narrative was what truly connected all these practices, and the best way to give them depth.
This has given me a different profile as a consultant: I don't try to fit stories into rules learned at film school; instead, I've grown used to asking myself what lies beneath a story and how it represents the world.
For years, I read a massive number of scripts from all over the world.
In my early years I made a living writing script reports for various companies, mostly European ones —work that wasn't especially well paid, and which, in order to get by, forced me to read an enormous number of scripts.
Over time I've come to understand that what I experienced back then as a practical necessity had a very strong impact. Seeing so many different ways of telling stories, before dedicating myself to going deep into any single one, gave me a sense of judgement that can't be reached any other way —as if something clicked into place after reading so many scripts from so many places around the world, over so many years.
I'm fully dedicated to this.
I'm a consultant by profession: for me it isn't a side job, it's what I spend my days doing —talking about scripts, thinking them through.
This mix —art and complexity from the ground up, an international outlook, years of reading all kinds of scripts before specialising, and a full-time dedication— is the outlook that has shaped Decoding Stories.
And that's enough talking about myself for today.
We've already started receiving your projects after the (semi)summer break — just a reminder that we're here whether you need an in-depth analysis or simply want to come throw around ideas and think out loud.
Here's to a great start of the season!
Warm regards,
